IoT Based Air Cleanliness Monitor: A Study on the Case of İstanbul Ümraniye

This study highlights the impact of air quality, a critical factor influencing human health, particularly in children. Poor air quality contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and poses a significant risk to vulnerable populations. Children, spending much of their day in schools, require clean air for optimal health and learning. This research measured air quality in three high schools in Istanbul’s Ümraniye district using IoT technologies. A system with SDS011 Particulate and MQ135 Air Quality Sensors was implemented, combining Arduino Uno, ESP8266, an OLED display, and ThingSpeak for real-time monitoring. Over 45 days, data revealed that PM10 and PM2.5 levels frequently exceeded WHO annual limits, while daily limits were exceeded in several instances. Harmful gases also negatively impacted air quality, with schools near major roads showing higher pollution. The findings underscore the importance of improved environmental policies, strategic school placements, and extensive air quality monitoring to ensure healthier school environments.
