Semi-resolved CFD-DEM modeling of pore clogging in pervious asphalt concrete

Pervious concrete and asphalt concrete suffer from permeability loss due to particle clogging, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study employs a novel semi-resolved CFD-DEM approach to efficiently simulate fluid-particle-pore interactions in permeable pavements. Validated against experiments, the method accurately captures clogging dynamics. Numerical simulations explore varying particle concentrations, sizes (spherical/ elongated multi-sphere), and pore structures, revealing a universal scaling law for clogging ratio evolution. The proposed framework enables rapid assessment of permeability degradation and offers design insights for enhanced pavement durability and drainage performance.

Abstract

Pervious concrete and asphalt concrete suffer from permeability loss due to particle clogging, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study employs a novel semi-resolved CFD-DEM approach to efficiently simulate fluid-particle-pore interactions in permeable pavements. Validated against experiments, the method accurately captures clogging dynamics. Numerical simulations explore varying particle concentrations, sizes (spherical/ elongated multi-sphere), and pore structures, revealing a universal scaling law for clogging ratio evolution. The proposed framework enables rapid assessment of permeability degradation and offers design insights for enhanced pavement durability and drainage performance.
