Infertility Together: Utilizing Gottman Method Couple Therapy with Couples Navigating Infertility
Infertility poses significant challenges for couples, often resulting in heightened conflict, decisional conflict, and disrupted attunement. Despite its prevalence, few specialized therapies address these unique stressors for couples going through infertility. Couples may experience criticism, blame, and isolation, which undermine relationship resilience. This article argues that Gottman Method Couple Therapy (GMCT) offers a research-based framework to support couples facing infertility. GMCT focuses on honoring life dreams, constructive emotion management, and dialogue during conflict. The author outlines infertility-specific GMCT interventions and essential clinical adaptations for therapists working with this population.
