The Inverse Galois Problem Through Migration Groupoids: A New Proof of the Finite-Quotient Equivalence and the Irrelevance of External Symmetry
Abstract The inverse Galois problem over Qis classically equivalent to a finite-quotient formulation: every finite group GG occurs as a Galois group of a rational polynomial if and only if every finite group occurs as a continuous finite quotient of a profinite Galois record attached to an algebraic extension of Q. This equivalence is well known and is traditionally proved using the Galois correspondence and the primitive element theorem. In this paper, we give a new proof of this equivalence using the migration groupoid formalism developed within the Vieta coefficient-rearrangement framework. The proof proceeds in two steps. First, we construct a Vieta completion bridge that establishes an equivalence between the rational and real coefficient migration groupoids. Second, we apply a forgetful functor that deletes all external-symmetry records (coefficient permutations, Vieta migrations, and endpoint paths) and retains only the underlying profinite Galois quotient data. This proves that the finite-quotient formulation is exactly the classical inverse Galois problem, now seen through the lens of groupoid equivalence. A second theorem establishes that the migration groupoid formalism is logically conservative with respect to the inverse Galois problem. External symmetry—defined as coefficient rearrangement and its induced Vieta migration—does not create new Galois realizations; it merely records and transports typed endpoint certificates. The finite-quotient certificate remains the essential arithmetic datum. Thus the paper demonstrates the unconditional irrelevance of external symmetry to the inverse Galois problem. The significance of this new proof lies not in replacing the classical one, but in revealing that the equivalence between the inverse Galois problem and its finite-quotient formulation is not merely a tautology. It is a genuine theorem whose proof can be carried out through category-theoretic means—via completion bridges and forgetful functors—alongside the classical structural proof. The groupoid framework also isolates the role of external symmetry and proves that it contributes no arithmetic content to the inverse Galois problem.
