Sustainable Product Design Powered by Artificial Intelligence in Light of the Future Thinking-Oriented Design Methodology "Triple-I"

This research examines the integrative relationship between sustainable product design and generative artificial intelligence (AI), with particular emphasis on the “Triple- I” methodology as an innovative framework for combining sustainability principles with intelligent technologies. The study is grounded in the concept of sustainable design guided by the Triple Bottom Line approach and aligned with selected Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to explore how generative AI can contribute to environmentally, socially, and economically responsible product development. The research problem stems from the observation that, despite the significant potential of generative AI to enhance innovation, its integration with sustainable design remains methodologically underdeveloped. Challenges arise from its varied impacts on individuals and organizations, as well as the absence of structured guidelines that support the simultaneous development of innovative and sustainable products. Accordingly, the study investigates the opportunities created through this integration in fostering strategic and systemic thinking within product development processes. It also presents the Triple-I methodology as an applied model that guides designers in leveraging AI technologies to support sustainability objectives. The findings indicate that integrating generative AI can accelerate idea generation, expand the range of design alternatives, and support more sustainability-oriented decision-making. Furthermore, generative AI is positioned as an enabling tool that enhances, rather than replaces, human creativity. The Triple-I methodology is identified as a structured framework that effectively links AI and sustainability, contributing to the development of innovative and resilient product solutions capable of addressing future challenges.
