Institutional Ecosystems and Soviet–Russian Combat Heritage as Technical Infrastructure for Elite Career Development in Pankration, Free Fight and MMA: A Longitudinal Mixed-Methods Analysis of WUFC World Ultimate Full Contact Athletes (Editions 18–30

This study analyses the consistent competitive dominance of Russian and Dagestani athletes at the WUFC World Ultimate Full Contact Championship (30 editions, 1988–2017, Portugal) and documents the subsequent elite international careers of 22 verified WUFC athletes across UFC, PFL, Bellator, HBO boxing, GLORY Kickboxing and other major combat sports promotions. Using a convergent triangulation mixed-methods design combining semi-structured interviews (Andranik Ashugyan, 4× WUFC world champion and M-1 Global competitor; Vladimir Stepkin, President of the All-Russian Pankration Federation and 1st Vice-President of the World Pankration Federation), systematic archival athlete career tracking and peer-reviewed literature review, the study identifies the motivational, cultural, disciplinary, technical-tactical, physical and emotional-psychological factors underlying this dominance. Results are interpreted through the Fernando Loio Combat Performance Framework (FLCPF; DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/9E872). Part of the WUFC Research Programme (companion study: DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/6Z7TC).
