Emergent Properties and System Viability

This paper examines emergent properties as one of the important manifestations of system viability within the framework of Vitology as an interdisciplinary research program centered on the concept of viability. Emergent properties are understood as new systemic qualities that arise through the coordinated interaction of system components and cannot be fully explained by analyzing individual elements separately. Unlike approaches that interpret emergence primarily as a characteristic of complexity, Vitology considers emergent properties an indicator of increasing system viability resulting from harmony, coordination, feedback, self-regulation, regeneration, adaptation, and development. The paper analyzes the relationship between emergent properties and existing scientific approaches, including systems theory, complexity science, synergetics, resilience studies, and complex adaptive systems research. Particular attention is devoted to the universality of emergent properties across physical, chemical, biological, ecological, social, organizational, technical, and artificial systems. Keywords Vitology, emergent properties, emergence, system viability, harmony, coordination, feedback, self-regulation, regeneration, adaptation, development, systems theory, complexity science, synergetics, resilience, complex adaptive systems.
