From laundry talk to transnational feminism: mapping collaborative networks through the Slovak feminist journal Aspekt

This article examines the emergence of Aspekt, the first Slovak feminist journal, as a collaborative translation and publishing project that played a key role in introducing feminist discourse into post-socialist Slovakia. Situating the journal within the broader cultural transformations following the fall of state socialism, we reconstruct the interpersonal, institutional, and transnational networks that enabled its formation and early development. Methodologically, the analysis combines a microhistorical approach with elements of Actor-Network Theory to trace relationships between human and non-human actors, including editors, translators, institutions, books, and funding structures. The research draws on multiple sources: a bibliographic dataset of translations published in Aspekt, paratextual evidence from the journal itself, and oral history interviews with two of its founders, Jana Juráňová and Jana Cviková. The findings show that authors, scholars, artists, editors, and translators behind Aspekt functioned as a feminist translating collective whose collaborative practices operated along several interrelated axes which included the circulation texts, formation of transnational support networks, and the development of non-hierarchical editorial and translational workflows. By mapping these relational infrastructures, the article contributes to a deeper understanding of feminist knowledge production, collaborative translation, and the role of periodicals in cultural transformation in post-socialist Central Europe.
