Three Boundaries of Vortex Return I: When Matter Begins to Bother — Life as Vortex Closure

Life begins not when matter becomes complex, but when overflowed difference is retained and returned into the system that produced it. The predicted retention reference is λ = 0.682, corresponding to a dilution ratio of 31.8%. At this boundary, chemical reaction chains cease to be merely dissipative and become recursively self-maintaining. This closure defines the first subjective boundary: not consciousness, but bother. The Residual Principle (Sanada, 2026) established that a dimensionless retention rate λ ≈ 0.68 appears across unrelated domains: social hierarchy (0.682), galactic rotation (0.687), and thermal conduction (0.68). The present paper extends this finding into the domain of prebiotic chemistry. Using continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) data from the Ca(OH)₂-catalysed formose reaction (Weiss and John, 1973), the productive-to-loss ratio at the onset of autocatalysis is measured. At 1.96–3.12% formaldehyde conversion, where the autocatalytic cycle first becomes self- sustaining, the productive fraction stabilises at λ_boundary ≈ 0.700, with Cannizzaro dilution loss at δ ≈ 0.300. This value lies within 2.6% of the predicted retention rate λ = 0.682. The system exhibits concentration bistability: below the onset boundary, the system collapses to a Cannizzaro-dominant failed state (λ ≈ 0.48–0.57); above it, the system jumps to a high-retention running state (λ_running ≈ 0.947). The onset boundary therefore functions as a separatrix between dissipation and self-reference.
