The Tragedy of Absolute Spacetime: Why Newton's Measurement Benchmark Is Doomed to Be Excluded from Physics

Newton's absolute time — "Absolute, true, and mathematical time, of itself, and from its own nature, flows equably without relation to anything external" — is one of the most famous definitions in the history of physics. Yet this definition contains a fatal logical flaw: it provides no means to measure absolute time. This paper argues that the tragedy of absolute spacetime lies not in being falsified by experiments, but in being operationally invalid. The positivist principle of physics requires every legitimate concept to have an operational, experimental, and verifiable definition. Newton's absolute time fails this condition, making it a metaphysical presupposition rather than a physical concept. Einstein grounded gravitational theory in empirical foundations through an operational measurement framework. Starting from the operational definition of the second in the International System of Units, Time Field Theory (TFT) proves that any operational measurement benchmark is necessarily affected by gravitation, hence necessarily "relative" rather than "absolute". Proceeding from the operational definition, enforced by the logical requirement of measurement self-consistency, flux conservation emerges as the unique and necessary mathematical formulation. For centuries light was merely an observed optical phenomenon; only after precision optical and electromagnetic experiments did humanity build a universal measurement system based on light, which exposed the fundamental mismatch between Newton’s absolute hypothetical benchmark and real operational clocks. No experiment on the constancy of light speed is needed; with nothing more than the observation of a falling apple, pure logic suffices to conclude that absolute spacetime is doomed, and relative measurement is the only legitimate physical framework. This manuscript serves as the methodological foundational paper of Metric Logic Dynamics (formerly Time Field Theory, TFT) serial works. It carries out epistemological elimination of Newtonian absolute spacetime from positivist metrology, distinguishing metaphysical spacetime ontology debates from the first-principle constraint of measurement self-consistency. It clarifies that the core divergence between Newtonian mechanics, general relativity and Metric Logic Dynamics originates from different settings of operational measurement benchmarks. The paper analyzes why the contradiction of absolute spacetime was hidden in low-speed approximation for hundreds of years, and only exposed after light became the unified standard of SI units. The Metric Self-Consistency Equation (MSCE) is derived purely from the self-referential consistency of closed-system measurement without extra physical axioms. This preprint cross-cites all serial TFT papers hosted on Zenodo, forming a complete logical chain from methodological criteria, metrological axioms to gravitational dynamical derivations.
