EFFECT OF GOVERNMENT POLICIES ON PERFORMANCE OF WATER CORPORATION IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIA
This study examines the policy and regulatory factors affecting the performance of water corporations in South East Nigeria and explores strategies to improve water service delivery in the region. Water corporations face multiple challenges, including governance and regulatory issues, financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, technical capacity deficiencies, environmental conditions, and socio-economic factors. These challenges result in poor service quality, inconsistent water supply, and reduced access to safe drinking water for many residents. The study highlights the need for comprehensive governance reforms, including clarifying roles and responsibilities, enhancing institutional capacity, and enforcing effective policies and regulations. Financial sustainability is emphasized through securing adequate funding, improving revenue collection, and leveraging public-private partnerships. Infrastructure investment and technical capacity building are identified as critical areas for improvement, alongside fostering stakeholder engagement and community participation to ensure sustainable water management practices. Environmental management and climate resilience are also crucial for addressing the impacts of climate change and ensuring long-term water supply reliability. The study concludes that a multi-faceted approach is essential for enhancing the performance of water corporations in South East Nigeria. By addressing governance, financial, infrastructure, technical, stakeholder, and environmental challenges, water corporations can improve their capacity to provide reliable and sustainable water services. These improvements will contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the region, ensuring that all citizens have access to safe and reliable water
