Evaluation at Land to the West of Meadow Lane, Lower Street Eastry

Eight trenches were excavated across the site. No direct evidence of modern truncation was recorded, although the absence of subsoil across much of the site may suggest that horizontal truncation has occurred. Of the 8 trenches, 5 contained archaeology. This was mostly, though not exclusively, situated in the northern and southern parts of the site. The archaeological features were recorded at between 16.07-19.82 mAOD and were found cut in to the underlying chalk which was at between 15.66-19.90 mAOD. No human remains or evidence of burial was recorded. Instead, evidence of possible Early Saxon quarrying and finds indicative of farming and/or settlement were recorded. Medieval and post-medieval evidence was also recorded, but this is thought to represent the slow infilling of a large quarry pit over a long period of time.
