Comet Corner, Middleton-on-Sea, Bognor Regis, West Sussex - Archaeological Mitigation Report

The programme of archaeological fieldwork consisted of two archaeological strip, map and sample (SMS) areas to the north of the A259 road, and four evaluation trenches to the south of the road. A Project Design was produced by WSP in 2025 that outlined the proposed methodology for the archaeological works. The results of the two SMS areas and the evaluation trenches demonstrated that the majority of the identified archaeological remains were located within the eastern half of Area 1. The datable evidence recovered from features and deposits in Area 1 suggests that the archaeology identified represents a small low-status rural settlement from the mid/late Iron Age to Romano-British periods, with evidence that this site's date of abandonment was sometime during the mid-second century. The other finds recovered from the excavation supports this conclusion.
