Scientific and methodological justification for testing the barrier properties of woven and non-woven materials and their combinations for medical devices in relation to virus-containing aerosols

Many viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of COVID-19), measles, influenza viruses and others, have a high ability to be transmitted by airborne droplets, which makes aerosols containing them a source and a way of transmitting the disease. Testing the barrier properties of woven and non-woven materials and their combinations in relation to viruses and virus-containing aerosols is one of the components of ensuring the quality, efficiency and safety of a significant group of medical devices. The article substantiates the need to form the methodological and methodical aspects of such studies, as well as to create correct approaches to testing the barrier properties of materials in the composition of protective medical and other products. This lays the foundation for improving the quality and competitiveness of personal respiratory protection equipment.
