Circular Economy Approaches towards Plastic Waste Management

Plastic waste generation has increased rapidly over the last few decades because of industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and excessive dependence on single-use plastic products. Conventional linear economic systems based on “take–make–dispose” principles have resulted in severe environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and accumulation of non-biodegradable waste in landfills, oceans, and urban ecosystems. Plastic waste adversely affects terrestrial and aquatic life, blocks drainage systems, contaminates soil and water resources, and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, sustainable waste management practices are urgently required to minimize environmental degradation and promote efficient utilization of resources. The concept of a circular economy has emerged as a promising strategy for transforming waste into valuable resources through reuse, recycling, recovery, and redesign of products and materials. Circular economy approaches aim to maintain materials within the production-consumption cycle for as long as possible while minimizing waste generation. These approaches encourage sustainable product design, eco-friendly manufacturing, resource efficiency, industrial symbiosis, and responsible consumer behavior. Advanced recycling technologies such as mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, pyrolysis, and biological treatment methods have significantly improved plastic recovery rates. Furthermore, digital technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and smart monitoring systems are enhancing waste segregation, collection, tracking, and recycling efficiency. Governments and international organizations are also implementing policies such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), plastic bans, and sustainability regulations to support circular economy implementation. This paper presents a comprehensive review of circular economy approaches toward plastic waste management by analyzing recent research studies, technological innovations, policy frameworks, and sustainable practices. The study evaluates various recycling technologies, stakeholder participation, digital solutions, and industrial applications associated with plastic waste reduction. The findings indicate that integrated waste management systems combined with public awareness, technological advancement, and strong governmental support can significantly improve plastic recycling efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. The paper also highlights challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high recycling costs, lack of segregation practices, and limited public participation. Finally, the study concludes that successful implementation of circular economy principles can contribute to sustainable development, environmental protection, economic growth, and the creation of green industries worldwide
