Death-Axis Predictive Optimization (DAPO) Model: An Integrated Framework of Predictive Processing, Active Inference, and Terror Management Theory for Transcending Death Anxiety and Optimizing Daily Life

AbstractDeath anxiety constitutes a fundamental challenge for human existence. While Terror Management Theory (TMT) has primarily addressed defensive responses to mortality salience, and Predictive Processing (PP) together with the Free Energy Principle (FEP) provides general mechanisms for minimizing uncertainty, there remains a notable gap in optimization frameworks specifically designed for death-related concerns that also incorporate individual differences. This paper proposes the Death-Axis Predictive Optimization (DAPO) model, which conceptualizes death as an "inescapable coordinate axis generating maximum prediction error." The model integrates a three-layer structure comprising Neurobiological, Psychological Practice (reconstructed from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and Meta-Philosophical levels. It further introduces seven computational parameters that capture individual differences in Death-Axis processing: time horizon (τ), temporal discounting (θ), uncertainty tolerance (ρ), self-model confidence (β), disengagement capacity (λ), self-boundary scope (δ), and legacy/generative drive (Ω). These parameters are mapped onto clinical phenomena such as depression, panic disorder, and suicidal ideation, thereby offering a personalized conceptual framework for engaging with death anxiety in ways that may support daily functioning. As a theoretical model, its empirical validation remains a task for future research.
