A Resistive‐Inductive Current‐Limiting Hybrid <scp>DC</scp> Circuit Breaker

With the continuous development of flexible DC transmission system technology, the DC circuit breaker, as a crucial component, plays a key role in fault clearance. Aiming at the existing issues in DC circuit breakers, such as high fault current magnitude and fast rising rate, slow fault clearance speed, and poor economic efficiency, this paper proposes a resistive‐inductive current‐limiting hybrid DC circuit breaker (RLC‐HDCCB). This topology utilizes a self‐charging branch to pre‐charge the capacitor. After the capacitor is reversely charged, a resistive‐inductive current‐limiting branch is inserted to limit the fault current. Following current limitation, the energy stored in the inductor is transferred to the capacitor via a thyristor, which reduces the energy absorption requirement of the arrester while accelerating fault clearance. The operational principle and topology of the proposed breaker are derived and analyzed. A model is built in PSCAD/EMTDC for simulation validation under both single‐terminal and four‐terminal conditions. Comparisons with existing topologies in terms of economy and fault current interruption performance demonstrate that the proposed DC circuit breaker offers superior economic efficiency and performance. © 2026 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.
