Concurrent serotonin syndrome and malignant hyperthermia: a rare postoperative challenge
Background: Serotonin syndrome (SS) and malignant hyperthermia (MH) are potentially life-threatening hypermetabolic syndromes that may develop perioperatively.Although both conditions manifest as hyperthermic crises, they have distinct underlying causes and require different management strategies.Case Report: We describe the case of a 33-year-old Caucasian man who developed clinical features suggestive of simultaneous SS and MH in a perioperative setting. This rare presentation illustrates the possibility of concurrent SS and MH and underscores the diagnostic challenges in differentiating between these two overlapping hyperthermic syndromes. Conclusion:The clinical overlap between SS and MH makes it difficult to distinguish the two conditions, particularly during the perioperative period. This case highlights the importance of recognizing their potential coexistence, and the need for careful consideration of both diagnoses to guide appropriate treatment.
