The Science of Divaswap: Exploring Daytime Sleep Through Ayurveda
Sleep (Nidra) is one of the most essential requirements for a healthy life, influencing both the body and mind. In Ayurveda, sleep is considered a natural process that occurs when the mind and sense organs become tired after continuous activity and are no longer able to function effectively. Adequate and timely sleep is regarded as crucial for maintaining good health, proper nourishment, physical strength, energy, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Ayurvedic classics describe Nidra as one of the Trayopastambha (three pillars of life), highlighting its importance in sustaining life and preserving health. The concept of Divaswapna (daytime sleep) is also explained in Ayurveda. Its effects can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on factors such as the season, an individual's constitution, age, health condition, and the presence of disease. Therefore, Ayurveda emphasizes the need for proper sleep habits to achieve and maintain optimal health.
