How Can a Concrete Balcony be Transformed into a Food Production Ecosystem?
This poster presents the research conducted as part of a balcony gardening project launched in Budapest with municipal funding. In Budapest’s densely populated areas, many residents only have access to green spaces in public areas. Their contact with fresh food and living nature is limited. This project demonstrates how even the smallest balconies and neglected garden corners can be transformed into productive, biodiverse ecosystems. Through a free, municipally funded permaculture training program, residents learned how to redesign these spaces for food production and reconnect with nature. This poster was published at the 2nd European Food System Science Conference in Lund, June, 2026.
