The Secret Life of Fart: What your Gut is Trying to Tell you.
This article examines the actual facts associated with digesting gas - fart. How much gas the gut actually produces, and why so little escapes: Bacterial fermentation of undigested carbohydrates in the human colon generates an estimated 300 mmol of gas per day — yet only about 10 mmol is actually excreted, meaning roughly 97% of the gas your gut bacteria produce is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream and breathed out through the lungs long before it ever reaches the point of being “passed.” Source: short-chain fatty acid metabolism research, MDPI (2024).
