AI-Driven Autonomous SAP Operations and SAP Basis Modernization: How agentic AI, predictive monitoring, and autonomous agents are reshaping the Basis function on the road to 2027
SAP Basis, for three decades a discipline defined by monitoring, patching, transport management, and after-hours incident response, is being re-scoped by artificial intelligence. AI agents are moving from passive dashboards into the operational loop, diagnosing root causes, executing remediations, and making calls that once required an administrator's judgement. This paper examines that shift alongside the forced migration from SAP ECC to S/4HANA ahead of the December 2027 end of mainstream maintenance, and argues that the two pressures now constitute a single workstream. Drawing on 2026 industry benchmark data and SAP's Sapphire 2026 announcements, it surveys the autonomous-enterprise architecture, the practical AI use cases already in production, the governance demands of a multi-vendor agent ecosystem, and the priorities Basis teams and consultants should adopt now.
