From Manual SAP Refreshes to Push-Button Automation: Lessons from a Global Healthcare SAP Transformation
SAP landscapes have grown from a handful of ECC systems into complex ecosystems spanning S/4HANA, BW/4HANA, multiple databases, and hybrid cloud, yet one foundational operation, the system refresh, often remains stubbornly manual. This paper presents a case study of a global healthcare enterprise that industrialized its refresh operations, moving from a labour-intensive, error-prone activity to an automated, end-to-end capability. It documents the scale at which manual processes broke down, the design principles behind an automation-first strategy, a phased rollout model, and the measured outcomes, including a 95% reduction in refresh cycle time and over five million dollars in operational savings. The paper distils five transferable lessons for SAP service leaders.
