Short-term Outcomes of Intravitreal Brolucizumab Injections for Diabetic Macular Edema

Purpose: To evaluate the short-term therapeutic outcomes of intravitreal brolucizumab injections in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME).Methods: This retrospective study included 32 eyes from patients diagnosed with DME who received intravitreal brolucizumab injections and were followed up for at least 3 months.Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured at baseline (before injection), and at 1 and 3 months after treatment using optical coherence tomography.Post-injection adverse events were also evaluated to assess treatment safety. Results: Following the intravitreal brolucizumab injection, BCVA significantly improved at both 1 month (0.24 ± 0.11 logMAR) and 3 months (0.25 ± 0.10 logMAR), compared with baseline (0.35 ± 0.16 logMAR) (p < 0.05).CRT also demonstrated a significant reduction at 1 month (333.2 ± 98.0 μm) and 3 months (378.7 ± 108.0 μm) after treatment (p < 0.05, both) from baseline (513.6 ± 112.3 μm).The SFCT also decreased at 1 and 3 months after treatment compared with baseline (p < 0.05, both), showing a statistically significant difference. No ocular or systemic adverse events were observed following the brolucizumab injection. Conclusions: Intravitreal brolucizumab injections in patients with DME resulted in significant short-term improvements in visual acuity and CRT, and no adverse events were observed.
