Exploring the multifaceted sociodemographic dynamics of isolation among MSM grindr users in selected cities of India
Background Men who have sex with men often face stigma-related isolation, leading to reduced social connectedness and heightened risks of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, impacting their well-being.Methods This study examines the prevalence, patterns, and factors influencing isolation among men who have sex with men. Data were collected from 300 respondents across six metro cities in India. Quantitative analysis employed descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression. In-depth interviews added context and depth to the quantitative findings, reflecting respondents’ lived experiences. Results The prevalence of isolation was significantly associated with experiences such as being called by derogatory words (p ≤ 0.001), body shaming (p ≤ 0.001), and bullying related to sexuality (p ≤ 0.001). The odds of experiencing isolation are nearly four times higher among men who reported primarily engaging in the receptive role in anal intercourse (OR: 4.60; CI: 1.21–17.52), compared to men who reported primarily engaging in the insertive role. Conclusion Addressing isolation among men who have sex with men in India requires a nuanced, destigmatizing approach. Policymakers, healthcare providers, and civil society should collaborate to foster inclusivity, reduce discrimination, and create safe and supportive environments.
