Nursing care of central line associatedbloodstream infection (CLABSI) caused by central venous catheterization (CVC): Areview
venous catheters (CVC) are a staple of today’s critical care, oncology, and surgical practice. However, catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) related to the use of these catheters are among the most frequent and severe complications with increased patient mortality, prolonged hospital stay, and increasing healthcare costs and ultimately affect patient outcomes and burden the healthcare system. There is ample evidence to suggest that the CLABSI is largely preventable and systemized, evidence-based nursing care is the deciding factor in success for reduction of its incidence. This review centers on the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and risk factors of CLABSI, with a primary focus on evidence-based bundle care strategies. It aims to construct a comprehensive nursing prevention and management framework spanning the entire process—from pre-insertion, during insertion, post-insertion, to post-infection management—thereby providing thorough guidance for clinical nursing practice.
