Advancements in elastomeric materials for sustainable and high‐performance applications: a review

Abstract Elastomers, characterized by their exceptional elasticity and resilience, have become foundational materials across a broad spectrum of applications ranging from infrastructure and industrial coatings to wearable electronics and soft robotics. Recent advancements have extended their utility beyond mechanical flexibility to include sustainability, self‐healing, recyclability and multifunctionality. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the latest progress in elastomer science, with an emphasis on eco‐friendly formulations, dynamic crosslinking chemistries and nanostructured reinforcement strategies. The paper systematically explores six key domains: sustainable elastomeric coatings and sealants, weather‐resistant elastomers for extreme environments, flexible systems for dynamic applications, integration into wearable and electronic devices, industrial surface protection and high‐performance infrastructure sealants. Special attention is given to biobased feedstocks, reversible bonding mechanisms, additive manufacturing and smart functionalities such as conductivity and autonomous repair. By critically examining the intersection of material design, environmental responsibility and technological performance, this review highlights how elastomers are evolving into multifunctional platforms that address the growing demands of modern industry and sustainability. The insights presented aim to guide future research in designing next‐generation elastomeric materials that are both high‐performing and environmentally conscious. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.
