Educating for Endurance: Gratitude to God, Meaning in Life, and Patience as Virtues in Adolescents Development

Patience is a core moral virtue that enables individuals to regulate emotions, persist toward goals, and endure adversity. Grounded in educational and positive psychology, this study examined how gratitude to God predicts patience among adolescents, with meaning in life as a central mediating mechanism. A total of 538 Indonesian junior high school students (43.7% female) participated using validated measures of gratitude to God, meaning in life (comprehension, purpose, mattering), and patience (interpersonal, life hardship, daily hassles). Structural equation modeling showed that gratitude to God significantly predicted all three dimensions of meaning in life. In turn, comprehension predicted greater interpersonal and daily-hassles patience, while purpose predicted greater life-hardship patience. Mattering was negatively associated with daily-hassles patience, suggesting that a strong sense of personal significance may increase sensitivity to minor frustrations. These findings indicated that meaning in life operated as the psychological bridge through which gratitude to God predicted distinct forms of patience. The study advances understanding of virtue development in adolescence, particularly within highly religious contexts such as Indonesia, and carries practical implications for character education, family engagement, and faith-based youth programs aimed at strengthening meaning in life to promote patience.
