Architectures of biointelligent value creation systems: A systematic literature review and typology
Biointelligent value creation systems (BVS) impose a structural design tension: distributed multi-actor production across heterogeneous networks must coexist with enforceable cross-actor governance, biological variability management, and auditable compliance documentation at every actor interface. Conventional value creation architectures (VCAs) typically address either production distribution or governance depth, not both simultaneously. No consolidated typology exists that assesses which architectures can sustain this combination under domain-specific BVS coordination requirements. This paper addresses that gap through a PRISMA-guided systematic literature review of 40 publications, synthesized via qualitative content analysis into ten VCA archetypes across four coordination logics: vertical/boundary architectures, platform and ecosystem architectures, modular and service architectures, and circular loop architectures. Validation searches confirmed completeness and extended the evidence base to 48. Each archetype was assessed for BVS suitability using a 6 C + SET profiling framework applied against a seven-dimensional BVS characteristics model established in companion work. Four archetypes are structurally suitable as standalone BVS coordination mechanisms: role-based orchestration, ecosystem coordination, service-led logistics integration, and circular loop governance. Four further archetypes are conditionally suitable. They contain the structural premises but degrade predictably without specific governance investment. Two archetypes operate through transactional coordination logic and cannot reach the governance depth required for compliant multi-actor biological production. Suitable archetypes share three structural features: explicit role differentiation with enforceable accountability, auditable interface obligations, and governance regimes that sustain compliance under biological variability. The resulting typology provides a traceable, domain-specific architecture map for BVS and serves as the basis for archetype-dependent design guidelines for information logistics systems in BVS settings.
