Bronze Age Round Barrow with Burial Features at Sowerby Gateway Sports Village, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Investigations 2017–2018
Archaeological investigations were undertaken at land off Gravel Hole Lane, Sowerby, North Yorkshire, between 2017 and 2018. Excavations revealed a Bronze Age round barrow, with internal features containing cremated human remains and the remains of three early Bronze Age Food Vessels. The Sowerby barrow is significant as lowland Bronze Age round barrows are scarce in this part of Yorkshire and have rarely been investigated using modern excavation methods. An almost complete Bronze Age Food Vessel and fragments of two others are the first such discoveries in this area in nearly 70 years.
