Preprint of "Beyond the Battery Paradox: A Technical Review of 4th-Generation E-Cigarette Architecture and a Strategic Circular Design Framework"
This paper investigates the architectural evolution and material complexity of 4th-generation electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) amidst an escalating global environmental crisis. It demonstrates that while contemporary monolithic integration and permanent bonding lock high-value urban ore into a systemic "battery paradox" , a transition to modular energy units successfully enables the non-destructive isolation of critical lithium and cobalt fractions. Furthermore, the study identifies a persistent e-liquid "smearing" phenomenon that degrades the quality of secondary material streams , while mapping the challenges of kinetic instability-induced fires within waste handling infrastructures and a tenfold regulatory exceedance in hazardous lead leachate concentrations. The work provides a sophisticated proactive ecodesign framework to eliminate structural component lockdown via reversible mechanical interlocks and mono-material housings , thereby maximizing multi-material recovery for a circular economy.
