[*] Possibility: Iris × Ouroboros - The Switching Mechanism Is Settled. The Interface Exchange Coupling (J-eff) Is Not.
This is a companion audit to Possibility: Iris × Janus [3], applied to a connection Iris already claims to have made. Project Iris [1] reports that its graphene-enhanced Rashba SOC (λR = 0.80 → 1.68 meV, +2.1×) “potentially reduces” Project Ouroboros’s [2] spin-orbit-torque switching energy by ∼ 4.41×, using the scaling relation switching energy ∝ λ−2R . Unlike the Janus connection, the switching mechanism itself – voltage-driven magnetisation switching via SOT – is not in question: Ouroboros validated it with LLG (Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert) simulation, confirming switching within ∼ 600 ps. This paper asks a narrower question: does the λ−2R scaling relation, which is only valid in the weak-perturbation regime (r = αRkF /J ≪ 1), remain valid across this specific 2.1× change? The answer depends entirely on J, the exchange coupling constant – but not the bulk value of J for Fe3GaTe2, which is large and well-characterised. It depends on Jeff, the effective exchange coupling at the specific graphene/Fe3GaTe2 interface, where orbital hybridisation is known, in general, to degrade magnetic coupling relative to the bulk. Ouroboros’s own published number for this – “exchange survival 80%” across the h-BN transfer layer used in its design – already documents that this degradation is real and non-zero for this platform. We do not know how much further Jeff degrades for the literal graphene/Fe3GaTe2 contact Iris’s enhancement would require, and no analytical formula or published literature value can supply it. As with Janus, the gap closes only with DFT calculation of the specific interface.
