Efficiency of ozone sorption for water purification

Supplying the population and economic entities with drinking-quality water, as well as ensuring wastewater treatment, is one of the key tasks in maintaining the safety of water use. Requirements for drinking water quality are becoming increasingly stringent both in Russia and abroad. This trend is determined by growing public expectations regarding the quality of consumed water and quality of life in general, as well as by the emergence of new knowledge about the effects of chemical and biological components contained in drinking water sources on human health. The article demonstrates that the existing water treatment technologies used in most Russian cities are based on a traditional scheme formed in the mid-twentieth century. These technologies involved water treatment according to classical two-stage or single-stage schemes based on microfiltration, coagulation with aluminum sulfate followed by settling or clarification in a suspended sludge blanket, rapid filtration or contact clarification, and water disinfection. It is noted that the use of ozone-sorption technology allows treated water to meet all regulatory requirements concerning drinking water quality. The article presents the results of a study of ozone-sorption water treatment technology conducted at a model stand of an experimental water treatment station. The operating modes of ozone-sorption technology and the dynamics of by-product formation during the treatment of water from the Moskvoretsky source of Moscow’s water supply system are considered.
