Healing Through Bibliotherapy: Fostering Wellness Among Academic Librarians

Academic librarians play a vital role in supporting the teaching, learning, and research missions of higher education institutions; however, their wellness is frequently overlooked. Increasing demands associated with technological advancements, evolving professional roles, and workplace pressures have contributed to heightened mental and emotional strain among academic librarians. This study explores bibliotherapy as an innovative and sustainable wellness intervention to support librarian well-being. By examining the potential benefits of bibliotherapy in promoting mental well-being, this paper argues for its integration into institutional wellness programmes to empower librarians in managing stress and professional challenges. Using a qualitative, exploratory, literature-based approach, this study examines the wellness challenges faced by academic librarians and critically evaluates existing institutional wellness initiatives. Findings indicate that while wellness programmes are often available, they inadequately address the emotional and psychological needs specific to librarians’ professional contexts. The study reveals that bibliotherapy has the potential to promote self-reflection, emotional regulation, and stress management among academic librarians. As a solution, the study recommends the integration of bibliotherapy into institutional wellness programmes as a complementary, low-cost, and accessible intervention. In conclusion, incorporating bibliotherapy can enhance holistic wellness support, empower academic librarians to manage professional challenges more effectively, and contribute to healthier, more resilient academic library environments.
