Toward Open Problem 3: The Annulus Liouville Correlator
Toward Open Problem 3: The Annulus Liouville Correlator This working note addresses Open Problem 3 of the reconstruction programme: the determination of Liouville two-point functions on the annulus with FZZT boundary conditions. Rather than claiming a complete solution, the note reorganises the problem and shows that its previously unified difficulty actually separates into two largely independent components. Purpose Open Problem 3 had been identified as a common bottleneck for several major programme components: the modular Hamiltonian of Article 4; the periodicity/factorisation hypothesis (F); the Bohr–Sommerfeld route to the elementary action scale; the determination of the Liouville coupling. The goal of the note is therefore not to solve the annulus correlator completely, but to determine which parts of the programme genuinely depend on it. Main Result The note demonstrates that Open Problem 3 splits into two distinct sectors: a modular sector, concerning the modular flow and modular Hamiltonian; a boundary sector, concerning FZZT correlators, the Bohr–Sommerfeld construction, and cosmological calibration. The first sector is substantially resolved, while the second is reduced to a small number of explicitly identified residual quantities. Modular Resolution Using radial quantisation, Tomita–Takesaki theory, and the KMS structure already identified in Article 4, the note establishes that the modular flow of the optimal reconstruction state coincides with the dilation flow in the scale-invariant bulk. The modular operator becomes: Δ = exp(−2π Hdil), with Hdil = −i∂ρ. The Bisognano–Wichmann temperature is shown to coincide exactly with the inverse temperature β = 2π previously obtained in the reconstruction framework. As a consequence, the modular component of Open Problem 3 is essentially closed in the scale-invariant bulk sector. Periodicity and Hypothesis (F) The annulus is shown to be the logarithmic image of the punctured plane. This immediately yields the required periodicity and single-valuedness properties of the Liouville field, providing a rigorous basis for the periodicity assumptions previously grouped under hypothesis (F). Boundary Correlator Structure The annulus two-point function is reconstructed in spectral form using standard FZZT boundary Liouville data. The resulting representation isolates all non-trivial dependence into the FZZT wavefunctions and their associated boundary momentum. The note does not claim a closed-form non-perturbative correlator, but it reduces the problem to already identified boundary quantities. Reduction of the Bohr–Sommerfeld Sector SO(2) symmetry implies that the boundary velocity potential is constant along each boundary circle. As a result, the Bohr–Sommerfeld integral collapses to a single number, determined entirely by the FZZT saddle momentum P*. This shows that Open Problem 3 introduces no new obstruction to the elementary action programme: the remaining gap is exactly the FZZT saddle already isolated elsewhere. Cosmological Calibration The note studies whether the cosmological closure length Lρ can select the Liouville coupling b. The problem is reduced to a single boundary quantity: the cutoff-scaling exponent γ of the boundary cosmological constant. Two sharply distinct possibilities emerge: γ ≈ 0: the calibration is non-selective and b remains free; γ = O(b): the calibration becomes strongly selective and may even exclude the physical parameter range. Thus the entire calibration problem is reduced to one computable boundary exponent. Open Problems Remaining explicit control of boundary-collar corrections; determination of the FZZT saddle momentum P*; explicit reconstruction normalisation N(P); calculation of the cutoff-scaling exponent γ. Overall Significance The note does not solve Open Problem 3 completely. Its main achievement is structural: a problem previously viewed as a single unresolved bottleneck is decomposed into a resolved modular component and a small set of sharply defined residual boundary computations. The note therefore functions primarily as a reduction and clarification paper rather than as a final solution.
