D1.3 – Detailed Engineering of the MeOH Modular Plant
The BeBOP pilot plant, to be installed and operated at VTT in Finland, integrates several key process units, including gasification, syngas purification, syngas conditioning using a Solid Oxide Cell (SOC), gas compression, and methanol synthesis. ICODOS is responsible for the engineering and construction of the methanol synthesis unit, which incorporates a novel 3D-printed reactor specifically designed for dynamic operation and high thermal efficiency. The conceptual and basic engineering of the methanol synthesis unit were carried out under defined boundary conditions imposed by the upstream process units and by the site-specific requirements of VTT’s Bioruukki demonstration facility. These conditions were addressed through extensive technical exchanges between ICODOS, VTT, and POLIMI to ensure full integration of the methanol synthesis module into the overall BeBOP process chain. The outcomes of this engineering phase are documented in Deliverable D1.2 (submitted in April 2025). Deliverable D1.3 builds directly on the results of D1.2. In accordance with Task T1.5 of the Grant Agreement, this report presents the complete detailed engineering package of the methanol synthesis unit. It includes the updated P&ID, refined mass and heat balances, detailed equipment design, and the container and plot layouts, as well as the integration of the 3D-printed reactor into the module. Overall, this deliverable provides the full technical basis required for procurement, construction, and the subsequent installation of the methanol synthesis unit at the VTT site.
