Therapeutic Yoga for Modern Life: 6 Practices for Chair, Desk, and the Prenatal Body

Yoga, as understood in the Patanjali tradition and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, was never intended exclusively for the flexible, the young, or the able-bodied. The root purpose of yogic practice is the progressive calming of the fluctuations of the mind — Chitta Vritti Nirodha — and this purpose is equally available to a person seated in a wheelchair, working at a desk, or navigating the physiological changes of pregnancy. This article examines the emerging and well-evidenced field of therapeutic yoga — the adaptation of classical yogic practices to specific physical, occupational, and biological contexts. Drawing on clinical research from the International Journal of Yoga, studies on workplace yoga from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and comprehensive prenatal yoga research from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the article reviews the evidence for yoga-based interventions in chronic back pain, occupational stress, carpal tunnel syndrome, and prenatal anxiety and discomfort. The research examines specific adaptations: chair yoga sequences for mobility-limited individuals, desk yoga micro-practices for sedentary office workers, and evidence-based prenatal yoga protocols showing reduced labour pain, lower rates of premature birth, and improved birth outcomes. The article integrates classical yogic philosophy with modern therapeutic application, arguing that yoga's therapeutic potential is most fully realised not in peak physical performance but in the meeting of practice with the full range of human physical circumstance.
