Reward Organizations and Discovery Organizations: Two Organizational Modes of Sustaining Continuation
This paper explores two tentative organizational modes through which continuation may be sustained. Building upon the concepts of Reward Continuity, Discovery Continuity, and Continuity Mismatch, the paper proposes that organizations may differ not only in what they produce, but in the mechanisms through which participation, engagement, and continuation are maintained. Reward Organizations primarily sustain continuation through measurable outcomes, incentives, rankings, performance indicators, and acquisition-based structures. Discovery Organizations primarily sustain continuation through exploration, refinement, craftsmanship, uncertainty, and ongoing discovery. Neither mode is inherently superior. The paper proposes that many organizational challenges may emerge not from the superiority of one mode over another, but from misalignment between organizational continuity structures and the continuity modes of participating individuals. In the age of AI-optimized reward systems, understanding multiple modes of organizational continuation may become increasingly important.
