Exploring critical success factors for sustainable production implementation in the agroindustry sector

The agroindustry sector faces mounting pressure to transition toward sustainable production (SP). However, complex interdependencies among critical success factors (CSFs) often hinder effective implementation. Despite growing awareness, the adoption of SP in the agroindustry remains slow, largely due to insufficient understanding of the factors that drive this transition and how they interact. This study aims to identify and prioritize the CSFs to implement SP in the agroindustry sector. An integrated multi-method approach was utilized, integrating the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) and Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM). The results show that government policy and regulations, environmental law enforcement and top management commitment are the most influential factors, exhibiting the highest driving power in the TISM hierarchy and positioned within the cause group in the DEMATEL. Government regulations function as the most independent external trigger for change, while management commitment serves as the key translating node that mobilizes internal strategy and operational alignment. Accordingly, governance should transition from a purely compliance-oriented approach to a more facilitative one that enhances institutional capacity and accelerates SP advancements . These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners, as well as a better understanding and practical implementation in agroindustry sectors.
