BEYOND BUDGETING PRACTICES AND SUSTAINABLE ORGANISATIONAL GROWTH IN NIGERIA: ROLE OF DIGITAL MATURITY

The study examined the effect of beyond budgeting practices on sustainable organizational growth of listed firms in Nigeria, with emphasis on the moderating role of digital maturity. The study was grounded on the theory of contingency. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The population comprised 154 listed firms, while Taro Yamene method was used to determine the sample size. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires after validity and reliability tests. The questionnaire responses were analysed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate techniques. The findings revealed a positive and statistically significant relationships between degree of decentralization, benchmark-based targets, adoptive planning systems, dynamic funding systems, performance-based incentives, and financial sustainability of listed firms in Nigeria. The study also found that digital maturity positively and significantly moderates the connection between beyond budgeting practices and sustainable organizational growth. This study contributes to knowledge by extending beyond budgeting literature within the Nigerian context through empirical evidence that degree of decentralization, benchmark-based targets, adoptive planning systems, dynamic funding systems, performance-based incentives significantly enhance financial sustainability of listed firms. Also, the study enriches existing literature through the application of quantitative cross-sectional analysis in investigating adaptive management practices and organizational sustainability in an emerging economy context. The study concludes that adaptive management practices ad digital capabilities are critical to enhancing financial sustainability and long-term organizational growth among listed firms in Nigeria.
