Session 25. Oral Presentation for: Brownfield engineering: the unsung hero of industrial excellence
Presented on 21 May 2026: Session 25 Brownfield engineering is emerging as a strategic driver of industrial performance as organisations increasingly seek value from existing assets rather than new builds. Operating within the constraints of live facilities, legacy design decisions, and incomplete information, brownfield engineers deliver targeted upgrades, life extension initiatives, and safety critical modifications that directly influence reliability, availability, and sustainability. Using anonymised examples from energy and oil and gas infrastructure, this paper highlights the importance of engineering judgement, governance discipline, and fit-for-purpose design in achieving safe, resilient, and commercially sound outcomes. Brownfield engineering is positioned as a competitive advantage and a critical enabler of industrial continuity. To access the Oral Presentation click ‘Supplementary data’ below.
