The Chemical Sciences Towards a Sustainable Future: Update on an Enduring Collaboration With Henning Hopf

Henning Hopf was a co‐founder and, for more than a decade, has been one of four core members of the group ‘ Chemists for Sustainability ’ (C4S) within the International Organization for Chemical Sciences in Development. During this period C4S served as a think tank and commentator, opening windows into new areas, providing perspectives for chemists into and beyond the mainstream activities of the discipline in education, research, and practice. Of especial significance has been the C4S proposal made in 2016 to introduce systems thinking into chemistry, which has gained considerable traction and catalysed deep‐seated reforms in chemistry education. The group has itself used the systems thinking tool to examine how chemistry can strengthen its engagement in the contemporary context of global challenges across diverse areas of science, including health, environmental sustainability, and the interfaces of science, policy, and health. This has included such diverse domains as human security, equity, diversity, and inclusion, resilience and the world of science publishing, where the value of systems‐based approaches to making connections of local and global significance has been exemplified.
