Fore! observations from the fairway on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of golf

The purpose of this study is to examine how equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI) are negotiated within small groups, focusing on golfers and their participation and enjoyment in the sport. While DEI has gained widespread attention, both negatively and positively, across business, education, and government, limited empirical research explores how these principles operate at a micro level or the temporal ordering of these constructs. This study employed a qualitative approach to examine how golfers incorporate and negotiate DEI values within their groups. Data were analyzed thematically to explore the ordering of DEI constructs in a model, incorporating established frameworks beyond DEI to provide a comprehensive understanding of their interactions. Findings suggest that while DEI ideals are recognized, their integration is shaped by group dynamics, shared experiences, and informal negotiations. This research contributes to understanding how DEI principles operate beyond institutional frameworks, providing insights into their application in recreational and social contexts.
