Emerald Elegans - husbandry and breeding of the Baron´s green racer (Philodryas baroni)
The Baron’s Green Racer, Philodryas baroni (Berg, 1895), is one of those snake species that are truly beautifulto look at. The elegant appearance of these diurnal opisthoglyphous colubrids is one of the reasons why they did not stay hidden from the attention of herpetoculturists, who have grown fond of these arboreal gems. The breeding of the Baron’s Green Racer has a long tradition at Zoo Pilsen, Czech Republic. If there is someone to discuss these South American colubrids — inhabiting the forests, woodlands and savannas of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay — with, it is undoubtedly Ondřej Škach, a zookeeper at the AKVATERA reptile house and Zoo Pilsen, who has been working with P. baroni for more than 15 years. His knowledge and experience will be appreciated by anyone considering the husbandry of these attractive display snakes.
