Clinical and radiological evaluation of a large rectal foreign body with spontaneous expulsion

Introduction and importance: Rectal foreign bodies (RFBs) are most commonly introduced through direct insertion, although, in rare cases, they may result from oral ingestion or migration from adjacent organs. The most frequent reason for insertion is sexual gratification. Case presentation: In this case report, we present a 51-year-old male who arrived three days after the insertion of a large foreign body, approximately 25 cm in length, into his rectum. The insertion was performed by a friend while under the influence of alcohol, and the object was spontaneously expelled in the emergency department without any complications. Clinical discussion: Accurate diagnosis relies heavily on a thorough history and clinical examination. However, imaging modalities are essential for determining the exact location, size, shape, and potential complications of the foreign body. Radiolucent foreign bodies can be particularly challenging to detect, even with advanced imaging techniques. Conclusion: Currently, there are no standardized medical protocols for the management of RFBs. Most of them are successfully removed transanally without surgical intervention. However, surgery becomes necessary in few cases and cases with complication like bowel perforation, sepsis, or peritonitis.
