Prelicensure Nursing Faculty’s Motivations for Remaining in Academic Roles Following Student Incivility

Previous research has shown that student-to-faculty incivility causes faculty to consider leaving the profession. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative, descriptive pilot study was to determine what motivates undergraduate nursing faculty to remain in their roles after experiencing student incivility. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews revealed three major themes: types of incivility and intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors. Although three of the seven faculty interviewed for this study considered leaving academia due to student incivility, none of them did.

Abstract

Previous research has shown that student-to-faculty incivility causes faculty to consider leaving the profession. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative, descriptive pilot study was to determine what motivates undergraduate nursing faculty to remain in their roles after experiencing student incivility. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews revealed three major themes: types of incivility and intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors. Although three of the seven faculty interviewed for this study considered leaving academia due to student incivility, none of them did.
