What is evaluative conditioning? A reply to Corneille and colleagues (2026).

In this paper, I respond to the preprint that was shared by Corneille and colleagues in which they discuss the downsides of my 2007 definition of evaluative conditioning and propose a new definition of evaluative conditioning. After discussing misunderstandings regarding the nature of the functional approach in psychology, I explain why I oppose the three proposed deviations from the 2007 definition and why I believe that many of the downsides that Corneille and colleague discuss are not substantial, have been acknowledged before, and/or can be dealt with without changing the 2007 definition.

Abstract

In this paper, I respond to the preprint that was shared by Corneille and colleagues in which they discuss the downsides of my 2007 definition of evaluative conditioning and propose a new definition of evaluative conditioning. After discussing misunderstandings regarding the nature of the functional approach in psychology, I explain why I oppose the three proposed deviations from the 2007 definition and why I believe that many of the downsides that Corneille and colleague discuss are not substantial, have been acknowledged before, and/or can be dealt with without changing the 2007 definition.
