Music Before the Big Bang: How the Spectrum Generates Reality
In memory of fallen comrades — scientists and soldiers. Their discipline, patience, and wisdom — knowing when to act and when to observe — guide everything I do. This essay investigates the hypothesis that spectral structures may be more fundamental to mathematics than the discrete objects they generate. Starting from Riemann’s explicit formula, which expresses the distribution of prime numbers as a superposition of waves arising from the nontrivial zeros of the zeta function, the text examines several convergent lines of evidence: the Montgomery–Dyson correspondence linking zero statistics to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrix theory, Deligne’s spectral proof of the Weil conjectures, the Hilbert–Pólya conjecture, and the de Bruijn–Newman constant arising from the heat flow on the Riemann ξ-function. The author carefully distinguishes between rigorously established mathematical facts, physically motivated interpretations, and ontological speculation. While the cumulative evidence for a spectral interpretation of the Riemann zeros is compelling, claims about physical realization or deeper metaphysical primacy remain conjectural. The essay does not claim to prove the Riemann Hypothesis, nor does it advance a new physical theory. Instead, it offers a synthesis at the intersection of analytic number theory, quantum chaos, mathematical physics, and the philosophy of mathematics. Its central thesis is that the intimate relationship between arithmetic and spectrum constitutes one of the deepest structural insights in contemporary mathematics — one that may ultimately reshape our understanding of discreteness, continuity, and the nature of mathematical reality itself.
