The Sleep Algorithm: Maintenance of Non-Rebootable Meaning
Why persistent intelligence requires protected consolidation. TF2.5, Volume IV (Version 3.0). An architectural theory of maintenance, not a complete theory of biological sleep. History-dependent, non-rebootable systems carry meaning in the trajectory rather than the state, so global reset is identity-destroying and maintenance must run as a protected, local, reversible operator. Non-REM is modelled as a write/commit phase, REM as a protected read/verify phase. The architectural core is conditional-deductive; the biological mappings are stated as hypotheses with explicit falsifiers. On the artificial side the paper separates calibration hallucination, an atemporal statistical phenomenon of a single forward pass, from consolidation drift, the longitudinal coherence loss in persistent and agentic systems, and shows that surprise-gated test-time memory, functional introspection in frontier models, and offline pre-computation are partial, independent arrivals at components of the proposed architecture.
