Studsvik’s Core Management System 5: Overview and Recent Developments

Core Management System 5 (CMS5) is Studsvik’s latest light water reactor (LWR) core analysis system available to utilities, research organizations, and regulatory authorities around the world. The CMS5 system consists of CASMO5 and SIMULATE5, which work together to provide the foundation of core design for boiling water reactors, pressurized water reactors (PWRs), small modular reactors, and water-water energy reactors (VVERs). The CASMO5 lattice physics and SIMULATE5 nodal codes are mature analysis tools and are currently being used for real-world core design activities, including the analysis of hundreds of LWR reload cycles across North America, Europe, and Asia. The development and maintenance of CMS5 under Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 has been fundamental to the success of the code system and adoption by utilities. This work describes several important and recent developments that highlight improvements, new capabilities, and extended applications. In particular, the generic licensing of CMS5 for PWR analysis approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and extension to higher enrichment/high burnup, the extension of CMS5 to VVER applications, the addition of uncertainty quantification, and the release of the SIMULATE5-K transient analysis code are all recent developments in CMS5. These demonstrate Studsvik’s commitment to bringing reactor analysis tools for real-world applications to support vendor independence.
